Weekly Newsletter- Week 0

Here is our first Weekly Newsletter for the week of 8/26/24:

Hey Parents and Guardians! We are BACK to school tomorrow. Here are a few things to remember:

Uniforms: Students MUST be in full uniform. No exceptions.

Arrival: Arrival is from 7:35-7:55. Please make sure students get dropped off in a timely manner, as they may receive breakfast upon arrival. For the FIRST DAY ONLY, we are allowing parents to walk their children to class. Parents may NOT stay, however, they may accompany their child to the classroom on the first day.

Supplies: PLEASE send in your school supplies with your child tomorrow. I only had a few students turn in their supplies so far, so be sure to send them in this week. Please and thank you!

Curriculum: The first week of school is mostly about building classroom foundations and relationships. We will have some ELA and math lessons, but we will NOT have homework on the first week. Homework will come home starting next Tuesday.

Testing: We will begin our NWEA testing this week. Please be sure students are well rested and have eaten a good breakfast on Wednesday and Thursday this week. We will have reading first, then math. This first testing is to get an idea of where the students are at as they enter 5th-grade. We will have another NWEA at the end of the year that will show the growth of the student over the school year.

Short Week: This is a short week, because of the holiday. That being said, we will only have school Monday-Thursday this week and Tuesday-Friday next week.

Important Dates (Mark Your Calendar):

Monday, August 26 - School Begins

Friday, August 30 - NO SCHOOL Labor Day Holiday

Monday, September 2 - NO SCHOOL Labor Day Holiday

Tuesday, September 3 - School Resumes; NWEA MAP Testing Continues

As always, if you have any questions, comments, concerns, or just want to see how your child is doing during the day, please don't hesitate to message me on the SchoolConnect app. It is the EASIEST way to get ahold of me. I look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow morning. Enjoy the last Sunday of summer break!

Welcome to the Fifth Grade!

Hello, and welcome to the Fifth Grade Honors Class with Ms. Winter here at Laurus Academy!

On here, I will post our weekly updates for the class, such as birthdays, curriculum being covered, upcoming tests, etc., to help keep everyone in the loop. You should have received a welcome packet containing classroom information, including this BLOG site, during our open house. PLEASE hang onto this packet, as you may need to refer to it throughout the year.

Please be sure your email and contact info are CURRENT and UP TO DATE in the school system, as I will use those phone numbers/emails to reach out to if there is an emergency up at school. These DO happen, so PLEASE ensure the info is correct. It is GREATLY appreciated.

School Supplies should be purchased and turned IN TO THE TEACHER  by the first week of class. We will hit the ground running and all students will need to have their supplies turned in. Please be sure to send these in on Monday, if you have not yet done so.

This year, behaviors will play a MAJOR role in student success. It is important that ALL students exhibit exemplar behavior, as this is an honors class. Students will need to lean in and engage in our curriculum this year, as maintaining honors class status is NOT guaranteed for next year. All students in the fifth grade will have an equal opportunity at sixth grade honors, as it is awarded based on academic performance and behavior. If students want to stay in honors, they need to continue to work hard to do so.

That being said, I know we will have an AMAZING year this year, and the students will thoroughly enjoy fifth grade. It is important to me that all of my students THRIVE in my class, so please don't hesitate to reach out if you feel your child may need some assistance or extra practice with any of our material. I strive to make our learning environment FUN for everyone, because I truly believe we learn the best when we are having fun!

Please be sure you and your child look over the welcome packet and reach out if you have any questions or concerns about any of the information contained in there. I strive for clear and effective communication, so please don't ever hesitate to reach out if you need clarification on anything throughout the year. I may not have all the answers, but I will work to find out the answers that I am unsure of, and always get accurate information back to you.

I aim to reply promptly to all emails and SchoolConnect messages, however, a reply may be delayed until the following weekday.

Finally, attendance is INCREDIBLY important to a student's success. Please ensure your child arrives at school by 7:55 am, as class begins at 8 am PROMPT. I look forward to seeing EVERYONE on Monday, August 26th. Have a great FINAL FEW DAYS of summer vacation!
