Weekly Newsletter 3/31/25 - Week 27

Happy Sunday parents and guardians! I hope everyone had a nice, relaxing break. We hit the ground running this week, as we have 5 days until 5th grade sits for MSTEP. Here is the weekly newsletter for the week beginning March 31st, 2025 (Week 27 of instruction):

Tutoring: Tutoring resumes this week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 3:30-4:30 pm. Pick up is at 4:30 pm sharp. Please make sure you are on time for pickup.

Supplies: We are in need of the following classroom supplies. If you are able to send any of these items in, it would be greatly appreciated. The items we are in need of are:

-Facial Tissue

-#2 Pre-sharpened pencils

-Clorox wipes

-Lysol disinfecting spray

Spring Spirit Week: We have Spring Spirit Week this week. Participation is $2 per day or $6 for the week. Students MUST participate in the theme or they will be asked to call home for a uniform. The themes are as follows:

Monday: Hat Day (Wear your favorite hat)

Tuesday: Flower Day (Wear floral prints or accessorize with flowers)

Wednesday: Sunshine Day (Wear your best yellow outfit)

Thursday: Pastel Color Day (Wear light blue, green, pink, peach, yellow, or lavender)

Friday: Detroit Tigers Day (Wear Tigers Gear or dress in navy and orange)

April Birthday Shout-Outs!: Happy birthday to Lisa Givens (April 13th), Kennedi Hull (April 13th), Arianna Morris (April 23rd), and Kayden Harris (April 23rd)! We will celebrate our birthdays on Friday, April 25th. If you would like to send in any treats for the class for our birthday celebration, please feel free to do so on this date. 

Curriculum: This week we will prepare for MSTEP. In ELA, students will begin reading "From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler". There will be a comp and grammar quiz on Thursday. In math, students will continue to work with division problems and strategies. There will be a quiz in math on Thursday. In science, students will investigate our impact on the planet and discover ways to reduce pollution and save resources! In social studies, students will explore our market economy and continue to learn about our state. There will not be a quiz in science or social studies this week.

Weekly Newsletter 3/17/25 - Week 26

Happy Sunday, parents and guardians! Here is our weekly newsletter for the week beginning March 17th, 2025 (week 26 of instruction):

Interims/MSTEP: With the completion of Interim 3 past this week, we now move our focus to MSTEP. This testing begins the week of April 7th, so we have VERY little time remaining to prepare. As such, it is VERY important that students are in attendance EVERY day and ALL day, when possible. We have a lot of material we need to cover, and missing any material can be very detrimental to a student's performance on these tests. Please only utilize absences and early dismissals when ABSOLUTELY necessary. Thank you!

Tutoring: Tutoring resumes this week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 3:30-4:30 pm. Dismissal is at 4:30 pm sharp.

Spring Break: This is our LAST week before spring break. There will be no school the week of March 24-28th. School resumes March 31st.

$2 Dress Down on Friday- March 21st is a $2. If your student would like to dress down (wearing pj's is free of charge for Reading Month Event), please send them in with $2.

Reading Month Events: The daily reading month events are as follows. Participation in events is free.

Monday- College Shirt Day (Wear your favorite college shirt to school)

Tuesday- Get on "Board" with Reading (Board Game Day)

Wednesday- Family Reading Night 4:30-5:30

Thursday- Dress Up as Your Favorite Book Character Day

Friday- Snuggle up with a Good Book (PJ Day *School Appropriate*)

Book Fair: The Scholastic Book Fair will be this week (Monday the 17th- Friday the 21st). If you would like your child to purchase any books/posters/pens/etc., please send them in with money or you can put money on an electronic card through the book fair. I will send students who will be making a purchase down to the book fair.

Uniforms: Please remember, crocs and slides are NOT permitted as part of our school uniform. Students may not wear crocs or slides of any kind.

Weekly Newsletter 3/10/25 - Week 25

Happy Sunday, parents and guardians! Here is our weekly newsletter for the week beginning March 10th, 2025 (week 25 of instruction):

Interims: Interim 3 begins this week. Please ensure your child gets a good night's rest and eats breakfast in the morning. As a reminder, Laurus serves FREE breakfast to all students from 7:35-7:55 am. 

Tutoring: Due to SPTCs, there will NOT be tutoring this week. Tutoring will resume next week.

Honors Assembly: On Wednesday, March 12th, we will have our Trimester 2 Honors Assembly. Reminder that if your child is receiving an award and you are attending the assembly, you are welcome to swing by the classroom after the assembly for a brief meeting in leu of your scheduled SPTC. Please ensure you come by and sign the form, we will chat briefly, go over the report card, and you're free to go. Also, you are free to take your child home with you after the assembly, as it is a half-day of instruction.

Free Dress and Half Day on Wednesday: As a reminder, there is a half-day of school on Wednesday, March 12th. Dismissal is at 11am. Students are allowed to wear free dress on this day.

Student-Parent-Teacher-Conference Week: This week is SPTCs. Please ensure you meet with me during this week. I have posted a sign-up link on schoolconnect, but you're welcome to swing by after our honors assembly and meet briefly with me in leu of a formally scheduled meeting. Please be sure to come by room 15 and sign the form.  You will be given your child's report card at this time. Thank you for your cooperation!

"313" Dress Down on Thursday: Thursday, March 13th is free dress for students. There is no charge to participate.

Weekly Newsletter 3/3/25 - Week 24

Happy Sunday, parents and guardians! Here is our weekly newsletter for the week beginning March 3rd, 2025 (week 24 of instruction):

March Moral Focus: As we enter a new month, our moral focus virtue is changing to Encouragement. This month, we will focus on students using encouragement! The fifth grade definition of encouragement is to be there for others when they need motivation. This will be valuable as we enter interim 3 and MSTEP.

March Birthday Shout-Outs!!: Happy March birthday to Kenneth Smith (March 21st)! Happy Birthday!! We will be celebrating Kenneth's birthday on Friday, March 28th. If you would like to send in treats for the birthday celebration, please feel free to do so on this date.

Tutoring: Tutoring continues this week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Tutoring runs from 3:30-4:30 pm. Dismissal is at 4:30 pm sharp. 

Student Parent Teacher Conferences (SPTCs): SPTCs will be the week of March 10th. It is mandatory that I meet will ALL parents/guardians. It is required that both student and parent attend these meetings. Report cards will be handed out at conferences. They will not be sent home with students. I posted a sign-up link for the conferences in a SchoolConnect. Please be sure you sign up for a time that both you AND your child can attend. If a phone meeting is necessary, please include/message me a phone number that you would like to be reached at. Thank you for your time and cooperation. I look forward to meeting with you all!

March is Reading Month: March is reading month and to celebrate it, we will have different activities and theme days for students. Please see the School Connect post that was sent with the March calendar. The themes for this week are as follows:
Monday- D.E.A.R begins!
Tuesday- Teacher's Favorite Book day
Wednesday- Buddy Reading day
Thursday- Get Wrapped Up in a Book day (Wear a Scarf!)
Friday- Make a Bookmark day

All students are welcome to participate, free of charge. Please encourage your child to lean in to reading this month!

Interim 3: Interim 3 begins next week. Please ensure that your child is getting a good night's rest and has breakfast in the mornings. As a reminder, breakfast is served at Laurus to ALL STUDENTS beginning at 7:35 am. It is important that students are set up for success as we enter our interims. 

Cookie Fundraiser: Cookie Dough Fundraiser forms went home on Friday. If you are interested in your child participating, please refer to the information provided in the fundraiser packet.

Homework Packets: Due to the temporary change in our schedule and lessons, I will not be sending homework packets home this week. Homework packets may resume next week. Thank you for your understanding as we navigate this new schedule and curriculum for MSTEP prep. New spelling words will still be sent home on Monday.

Curriculum: This week we will be implementing our MSTEP Mondays, where our focus is entirely on MSTEP prep. This focus will be in ELA and math. Instruction begins promptly at 8:10 am, so please be sure students arrive on time so they do not miss important instructional material. It is essential, especially as we enter this final push before testing, that students arrive on time and are present ALL DAY to ensure their success. In ELA, students will work on understanding the main idea of a text and finding evidence to support it. They will also begin working on an opinion writing piece. There will be a spelling test on Monday and a comp and grammar quiz on FRIDAY. Our weekly assessments will switch to Fridays as we implement our new schedule. Please be advised. In math, students will work on dividing fractions by whole numbers as well as division story problems. There will be an End of Unit Assessment on Friday. We will review on Thursday for the assessment. For science and social studies, we will review for Interim 3.
