Weekly Newsletter - 5/26/25 - Week 35 of instruction

 


Dear Parents and Guardians,

Happy Sunday! I hope you’re all enjoying a restful and meaningful Memorial Day weekend. Just a quick reminder that school will be closed on Monday, May 26th in observance of the holiday. Classes will resume on Tuesday, May 27th.

Here’s a look at what’s happening in our classroom this week (Week 35 of instruction):


📚 Gradebook Reminder

The gradebook will officially close on Wednesday, June 4th. After this date, I will no longer be able to enter any grades. Please help your child check for any missing assignments and ensure they are submitted by the deadline. Every point counts, and it’s important we finish the trimester strong!


🚌 Field Trip Highlights

Our 5th grade field trip this past week was a huge success! The students had an incredible time and made some great memories with their groups and chaperones. A heartfelt thank you to all the parents who volunteered their time to join us—you helped make the day extra special!


🎉 May Birthday Celebration

We’ll be celebrating our May birthdays this Friday, May 30th. If you would like to send in a treat for the class, we would love to include it in the celebration. Thank you in advance for helping us make this day fun for our birthday students!


✏️ Final Spelling Test

Our last spelling test of the year is coming up on Monday, June 2nd. Students received their final word list this past Tuesday, so they have plenty of time to review. Please encourage them to study—let’s finish our spelling work on a high note!


📖 Curriculum Update

  • ELA: We’ll be wrapping up Bridge to Terabithia this week. Next week, students will have the opportunity to watch the film adaptation and compare the two.

  • Math: We’re diving into dimensions and area, using flag models as a hands-on way to explore these concepts. There will be a math quiz on Friday.

  • May 27th: K–2 Spring Numeracy Assessments begin

  • May 30th: Progress Reports available

  • June 2nd: Final Spelling Test

  • June 4th: Gradebook closes

  • June 9th: 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony, 5 PM at Westfield High School (details to follow)

  • June 10th: Kindergarten Field Day

  • June 11th: Kindergarten Promotion Ceremony, 9 AM at Laurus (details to follow)

  • June 12th: Field Day for Grades 1–7

  • June 13th: Last Day of School — Half Day (11:00 AM dismissal)

  • June 24th: Summer School Program begins

5th Grade Weekly Newsletter

Week of May 19th (Week 34 of Instruction)

Happy Sunday, families! I hope you’re enjoying a restful weekend. Here’s everything you need to know for the week ahead:


🚍 Field Trip – Wednesday, May 21st

The big day is almost here—our 5th grade field trip to the Michigan Science Center is this Wednesday!
Here are a few reminders:

  • Blue shirts are required for all attending students.

  • Students not attending the trip may stay home and will receive a science packet to complete for a grade.

  • Chaperones: Due to limited bus seating, you may need to drive your own vehicle. Thank you for your flexibility.

  • Everyone (students & chaperones) should bring a cold lunch—there will be no hot food available.

  • We will begin loading buses at 9:00 AM, so please be on time!


*  No School – Friday, May 23rd & Monday, May 26th

In observance of Memorial Day, school will be closed on Friday and Monday. Classes will resume on Tuesday, May 27th.


👕 Uniform Reminders

A few important dress code reminders as we head into the final stretch of the school year:

  • No crocs, sandals, or slides—closed-toe shoes only.

  • Purses should not be brought to school.

  • Uniform sweaters are allowed, but hoodies, sweatshirts, and jackets must be left at home.

Thank you for helping students stay in dress code!


🧃 Tissue Donations Needed

We’re running low on facial tissues. If you’re able to send in a box or two for the classroom, we would be so grateful!


📚 Curriculum Highlights

ELA:
We’ll continue reading Bridge to Terabithia and focus on identifying the theme and how it develops in a story.

Grammar:
Students will learn how to write complex sentences.
Quiz Thursday on comprehension and grammar.

Math:
We’ll be classifying triangles, polygons, and quadrilaterals.
Quiz Thursday on this material.

I hope you’re enjoying a relaxing weekend and a wonderful Mother’s Day! Here’s our classroom update for the week of May 12, 2025 (Week 33 of instruction).


📚 Curriculum Highlights

ELA: We’ll continue reading Bridge to Terabithia this week. Students should be ready for a spelling test, comprehension quiz, and grammar quiz on Thursday.

Math: We’re diving deeper into decimals and learning how to plot points on a coordinate grid. A math quiz is scheduled for Thursday, and we’ll spend Wednesday reviewing in class.


📝 Gradebook Reminder

The gradebook will officially close on Wednesday, June 4. I will not be able to accept any missing assignments after this date. Please encourage your child to complete and submit any outstanding work as soon as possible. Let’s finish strong!

Weekly Newsletter 5/5/25 - Week 32




Dear Parents and Guardians,

Happy Sunday! Can you believe we’ve made it to May — the final full month of the school year? We’re in the home stretch, and I’m so proud of all the hard work our class has put in so far. Below is your newsletter for the week of May 5, 2025 (Week 32 of instruction).


🌟 NWEA Testing
We officially wrapped up NWEA testing this week, and I’m thrilled to share that the class demonstrated strong growth overall. Their focus and effort truly paid off, and I couldn’t be prouder. With this milestone behind us, we’ve completed all major standardized tests for the year. The only assessments remaining are our final common quizzes in ELA and math.


📓 Gradebook Reminders
Please note that the gradebook will close on Wednesday, June 4. All missing assignments must be submitted by this date. If your child has any outstanding work, please encourage them to get it turned in as soon as possible. Your support in helping students finish strong is greatly appreciated.


👕 $2 Dress-Down Day – Friday, May 9
This Friday is a $2 dress-down day. If your child would like to participate, please send them in with the $2. Just a reminder that dress-down attire must still be school appropriate.


👔 Uniform Reminders
We’ve noticed an increase in students arriving out of uniform. Please remember that unless it is a designated dress-down day, all students must be in proper school uniform. This includes appropriate footwear — no Crocs, slides, or non-uniform jackets or sweaters. Students not in uniform may be asked to call home for a change of clothes. Thank you for helping us uphold our dress code expectations.


📚 This Week in Curriculum

  • ELA: We’re beginning Bridge to Terabithia and focusing on identifying plot elements and types of conflict. Students will also be learning how to incorporate adverbs effectively in their writing.

  • Math: We’ll continue working on multiplying and dividing decimals, and will also begin graphing and working with coordinate planes.

  • Science: Students will conduct an experiment to observe how matter is conserved—even when substances are mixed or dissolved.
